  1. Set up is easy. Ice maker should be near a sink. I can not imagine having it without the extra tank. We fill the tank at least once a day for a family of 4. (Get the tank!) I had to try about 10 times to get WIFi App to sink up. We shut the ice maker off at 9pm and it still has ice in when we turn it at 6am. We have an open floor plan so it is a little louder than I had hoped but I feel like you just get used to it. A few days after use it said I need to descale it even though we have a water softener. GE said to unplug it let it rest. The Error went a way. I did purchase the extended warranty. Lots of good ytube videos on how to open it up and clean the inside. Will update this review in a few month. The ice is perfect and makes drink cold fast with little foam. Not hard to chew and is helping me get more daily water intake. The drip tray is my only complaint so far. When you open the ice drawer it drips so you need a paper towel.12/12/22- had to set it to cycle off every few hours otherwise it starts squealing. The internal defrost cycle does not seem to work that great. So I would not advise trying to run it for 16 hours straight.12/26/22- so still dealing with squealing. I have been playing around with the schedule to give it more chances to defrost. I think the squealing comes from it not being about to push the frozen ice out. Still love the ice so not giving up yet.12/28/22- did several cleaning cycles with bleach. Set up running time for hour on then and hour off. Moved it so it has good ventilation on both sides. No squealing so far after changes.1/14/23- to sync up to phone app pull up a chair and sit right next to it with your phone. Any further away does not seem to work. My machine has been working fine as long as it has several off cycles between run times. If I try to leave it on for more than a few hours it always start making unpleasant noises. It has lost WiFi twice and each when it keeps running without programming it starts making all kinds of bad noises. Just my personal experiences. Keep with a on/off hourly schedule.

  3. This product seems great, love the type of ice, but the issue is the squeaking. After only 6 months use it has starting squeaking constantly and nothing we do will get it to stop. The item has been taken care of and cleaned. If this is a flaw, it needs to be addressed. Nothing from the company.Update: item had to be returned, wasn’t even a year old, due to not producing ice. Finally got ahold of the company and got a replacement. The replacement however was only working properly for maybe two months, periodically stop making ice and make loud grinding noise. The company stated the warranty is void after the initial replacement. Sad that companies don’t stand behind their products, do not buy, too over priced for a product that can’t even last a year.Latest update: the ice maker was received Nov of 2023, it didn’t even last 6 months, by January of 2024 was already making weird noises and not making ice. It was completely dead by February. Of course once they replaced it the warranty no longer exists & no option of paying for a new one. This company doesn’t back their product at at, worst appliance purchase I’ve ever made, what a waste.

  5. The media could not be loaded.  ==========Final update: 7/25/2023: OnPoint responded to the BBB complaint. I was offered to continue waiting an undetermined amount of time for a 3rd new unit, I opted to get completely out of this mess. The 2nd unit is being shipped back right now and upon receipt, GE is providing a full refund. Meanwhile I already have an Opal 1 in its place and quite happy, and it was about 1/2 the price. So what would you gain by going the Opal 2 route (other than a giant headache)? A front panel that lights up letting you know, by words, what is going on with the ice maker. The Opal 1 has an LED ring that pulses or changes color and you kinda have to decipher it but it isn’t any big deal. The 2 also has the app and you can schedule the ice maker to turn on and off at certain times or even tap a button on your phone to turn it on or off. I kinda liked that so what I’ve already done is programmed a smart plug to work on a schedule and it can be controlled via app as well so nothing lost there.’Sonic’ ice is absolutely spectacular. There are now lots of these ice makers on the market. My biggest advice is to make sure to get one that includes a side tank or is directly plumbed to your R/O system otherwise you’ll forever be jumping up and refilling small amounts of water.===========Another update: 7/17/2023: I submitted a complaint with the BBB over the weekend regarding OnPoint Warranty Solutions LLC which is the official support group for GE Opal. I also offered to provide 33 emails I’ve had with support (sent/received). I have still not had any communication returned from support. Buyer beware if you need any product support, which you most likely will. Working on figuring out a contact directly with GE to discuss the product and experience with support. I had actually requested this information from Onpoint but have not had a response.===========Update 7/13/2023: nothing to report. GE Opal “advanced” support has gone completely dark. No tracking info on a replacement unit (which by the way would be Unit #3 since March). I’ve requested tracking info multiple times on the 3rd unit and they are non-responsive. I think these Opal units are like playing craps, sometimes you run hot and have a great time, but most of the time you end up heading back to your hotel room early with nothing in your pocket because the casino drained you.Not sure what else to say. Tomorrow I will be contacting the BBB. Shoddy engineering on product, worse on support. To recent purchasers, enjoy the ice, it is indeed fantastic. Just be ready to have your experience take a 180 on you. Then I wish you the best of luck with your giant paperweight.I’m still holding onto hope that I’ll be able to provide a much better update on this.==========Review written by my husband.DO NOT BUY. Absolutely terrible product and terrible support. Yes when it works the ice is spectacular, but go buy the Opal 1 version. I know multiple people who have the Opal 1, never use distilled water and never descale and never have problems. The GE developers got this product wrong.Purchased March 11, 2023. Plain and simple, this product has issues and support is terrible. Within a couple of weeks of purchasing we noticed some strange noises coming from the unit. Not much longer the noise became overwhelming and we simply had to just turn the unit completely off (see video that support requested from me). Too late to return so we worked with Opal support. The experience overall has been terrible. The number one thing that support says is to always use distilled water. Yet nowhere on the product does it state this and I don’t know anyone who would buy an expensive ice maker to also have to always purchase special water to use in it. We have an R/O system in place and always use that. The other thing that support will say is that every two weeks you have to descale the unit. This means removing all ice and draining all water, adding in a mixture of water and vinegar and running that through the cleaning cycle several times, then flush that all out, wiping everything down good, make several batches of ice and throw that away to make sure you are not mixing all that vinegar in with your icewater or drink. The descaling process basically take overnight as you have to stuff a rag or sponge up into the unit and let it sit during this downtime process. We also purchased the official GE Opal filter. This makes no difference in operation of this unit and is a waste of money. After working with support for weeks and weeks, they finally said they would send a replacement unit. Their standard process for replacement is to send a refurbished unit. So now you pay lots of money for a product that doesn’t work right only to get a unit that someone else had a problem with and was returned? Upon receipt of this ‘new’ replacement unit, the instructions state that there could be some leftover crud from their cleaning process. Yeah, okay, see the next picture. I spent two hours trying to clean that crap out of the unit, flushed several cycles through, tossed ice, that stuff is still everywhere. I decided to keep trying to clean it anyway. BUT, when I then proceeded to connect the unit to my home network, the password printed on the label on the back of the unit didn’t work. I struggled for some time before reaching out to support and providing that information plus the picture of the disgusting unit. The manager seemed a bit shocked and personally called me, the unit should never have been shipped that way and it was obvious and acknowledged that they completely messed up repairing someone else’s returned unit that had wifi problems and wasn’t cleaned right and then sent to me. The outcome of this: I was told I would be receiving a brand new replacement unit. Flash forward 2 1/2 weeks later, I still have not received any shipping/tracking information and unit #2 that I have at the house now sits dark on the counter. When I asked repeatedly for tracking information I was asked to have patience as the supply chain was having issues. At this point I specifically requested a full refund as it has been several months with nothing but a crappy experience and very little ice to enjoy along the way. We’ll see how this all pans out but my advice based on my personal experience with this product and their support is to avoid it completely. I was going to suggest to purchase the extra coverage but I can’t in good conscience advise anyone to pay for this product period. Go out and google opal ice maker noise, or why does my opal ice maker scream like a banshee, something along those lines. You’ll see lots of people sharing. For many this occurs after the warranty period (you know, that time where they’ll gladly send you a used replacement) and they tear the thing apart and try to experiment with different ideas to solve the problem. One post I read even said the buyer eventually just tossed it in his garage because it is unusable.I’ll update this review once I hear something back from support. But this purchase has been nothing but pure frustration and a huge time waster. The simple fact that they say you have to use distilled water and a full descaling/cleaning with downtime every two weeks should create a class action suit as nowhere does the product state this when considering a purchase. I’m mad as hell about this purchase but it sure looks like GE doesn’t care, or stand by it’s products.

  7. I did a lot of research on machines for the house. I looked at multiple units, some that required a drain. I had a smaller Frigidaire but it required constantly filling the water during the day and although it claimed to make 26 lbs during the day, it was a slow and tedious process in getting to the 26 lbs. The ice also melted extremely fast even in a Yeti cup. I am extremely happy with this GE Profile and even though the ice is smaller (and in larger amounts), it lasts longer compared to the larger cubes from the Frigidaire in my Yeti. Some things to note, it does have some noise to it. But not enough to bother me and it was relatively the same as the Frigidaire unit. I did read the comments and someone mentioned scheduling it to turn on and off in the middle of the night to keep continuous ice making. I guess if it stops, it melts quit a bit. Stopping and restarting helps. I love the fact I can leave this on continuously. I do like the App feature, but rarely use it honestly but it’s a nice to have for sure. And finally, I don’t have arguments with the family of 5 on why we don’t always have ice. The side XL unit is an absolute MUST. Although we got the side unit, we STILL go through a lot of jugs of water. In the heat of Texas, of course we should be using it quite a bit. And USE DISTILLED WATER. Do your research on WHY to use Distilled. Makes a difference. Flavor, of course will be different than drinking water but we use filtered water from our refrigerator along with our Distilled Ice and scaling will be reduced significantly if at all. The beauty of this unit is that I don’t have to clean as much using distilled water, I don’t have to drain often, and I can leave it on constantly. Couldn’t be happier at the moment with this purchase

  8. 9. The media could not be loaded.  Every week I found myself going to Sonic to get their yummy ice. It was a fight to get it home in one piece and refrozen in my freezer without it turning into a solid chunk of ice! Once summer hit, I knew it was going to be harder so I looked into investing to my own “sonic ice maker” and found this one. I debated about getting the water attachment, but decided since I got it on sale, I’d do myself a favor and get it. If you are questioning getting the water attachment, do it!! I’m so thankful I got the attachment. Our family goes through so much ice a day that I’m filling the water attachment several times a week. Now here is my only complaint about the water attachment – it’s really hard to hold/handle to fill the water in the container. For me, it’s a two person job as I use my Zero Water Filter Container to fill the water tank – one to hold the water tank and one to push the nozzle of the water filter container. Without that side container, you would have to pull the ice basket out and fill the water from underneath, which can be messy as some ice does slip through the holes of the ice basket. So if you are on the fence, get it!!Cons – my sidetank lid came to me scratched as well as the lid of the ice maker. It bothered me when I first bought it, but to send it back over scratches wasn’t worth the hassle so I kept it. I see it now and still wish I sent it back and had it fixed, but the reality is I’m sure it would have gotten scratched sooner or later. The feet of the ice maker are sharp and scratched up the counter where I initially had the ice maker. I wish it wasn’t so sharp and I hadn’t ruined my brand new counters. While the machine is supposed to have a humming noise when the ice makes, sometimes it gets loud. But in apartment living where everything is so condensed and open, you are going to hear everything. The noise is louder than my fridge (everyone said the noise wasn’t louder than a fridge) and sometimes bothers me with its noise.I wish there was a place to put the ice scooper. Right now it sits on the inside/top of the ice, but sometimes it gets burried in the new ice. If the ice scooper had a hole in it, I could hang it on the outside of the ice maker.Lastly people have asked if the inside of the ice area is a freezer. While it’s cold on the inside where the ice is made, it all sits together and keeps the area cold. As it melts, it goes through the basket and recycles the water to make new ice.I believe that’s everything about this amazing ice maker. GET THE SIDE TANK and save yourself the headache!

  10. At first, I was skeptical about getting this for my wife as a birthday gift because of the price – I wondered if it was really worth it. Now that we’ve had it for almost a year, I can tell you it is DEFINITELY worth it! This ice maker is so amazing! It actually promotes hydration – you WANT to drink more water because you just love the ice! I was impressed at how fast the ice starts being made after turning it on. It does make a slight humming noise but it’s at such a low decibel level so it’s barely noticeable. You do have to take good care of it though. Read the cleaning instructions and take the time to clean it on a regular basis. But do NOT try to open the top of the unit. It’s very difficult to pry open and it’s not worth the trouble. Just use the two cleaning methods that are mentioned in the manual… and you’ll have great tasting ice in no time. Our friends and family love when we have this ice ready when they come over! It’s like getting Chick-Fil-A ice for free!

  12. The GE makes great ice and lots of it and it has a self-cleaning mode. For comparison, we had a Costway that broke after three years of continuous use. Its fan was loud when making ice, but its smaller ice bin filled quickly, so it didn’t run for very long. It worked great, but it was very difficult to clean, requiring about 45 minutes with a toothbrush and flashlight to get the gunk out of its depths. The GE’s fan is almost silent, but the compressor makes a low omnidirectional 118 hertz hum at about 62 decibels. It’s quieter than the Costway, but the GE makes more ice so it runs for longer periods.Interestingly, my wife commented that the GE is louder. So psychologically, the longer (but quieter) run time seems noisier. The sound might not be a problem if you have a loud household (kids, TV, dogs, etc.).If you have a quiet household with a kitchen that’s open to the living room and the ice maker is sitting on your countertop, then you might be annoyed. We put the ice maker in our walk-in pantry, so it’s out of sight and its sound is muted.Despite the GE’s weird loud-quietness, I think I’d still pick it because of its capacity, self-cleaning capability, the type of ice it makes, the lighted ice bin, and, being a $$ quality GE Profile product, it should last a lot longer (hope). It can be controlled via an app which works with Google Home and presumably Alexa too, but unless turning the unit and bin light on/off remotely is a compelling feature, it’s not worth loading and configuring yet another third party middleware app (i.e., Smart HQ) to do so.

  14. This is our 3rd opal (bought the first one from the original manufacturer, the 2nd one from GE after they bought it, and now this one). The first two both lasted approximately 18-24 months, while being used pretty much 24 hours a day. Both of them eventually failed because the hard water in our city eventually overwhelmed the pump motor and cause the machine to fail. It is very apparent that we are not the only customers to have experienced this problem….this version of it comes with far more explicit instructions on how to prepare the water that you put into the unit, along with features that will remind you when to clean and/or de-scale the machine. It seems to be running quieter than the previous version (of course the previous version started getting pretty loud just before it failed, so not 100% sure it is quieter than the previous version before the hard water scale built up in it). We plan to follow the instructions very closely, and we are using a water distiller to prepare the water before using it for ice….we will see if it holds up longer. I will plan to give an update after several months of using it given the new instructions.

  16. Absolutely love this product. We have been debating getting an icemaker for a super long time and we finally pulled the trigger on this on Black Friday. Completely worth the purchase. Our ice maker in our fridge went out and we were hoping to find an alternative and I really wanted the pellet ice (like at Chick Fil A and Sonic) so we looked at this one. It was super easy to set up. We follow the cleaning instructions and let it run for a few cycles before using it to make ice. This is so awesome and makes a ton of ice. We only use filtered water which I would highly recommend (prevents build up). It is a a great purchase!
