This directorial debut of Chinatown Oscar winner Robert Towne is a bracing celebration of athletes who live the way they play: with total passion. Mariel Hemingway plays a promising hurdler who finds needed emotional and athletic seasoning with a caring mentor (Patrice Donnelly). After the two fall in love, their relationship is threatened as both vie for a spot on the U. S. Olympic team. Personal Best's human insights make it compelling for more than just sports fans. Months of training build into explosive moments of competitive truth. Cameras capture the charged atmosphere of the 1980 Olympic Trials. And world-class athletes (including Olympians Donnelly, Jodi Anderson and Kenny Moore) excel as actors, bringing to the set the same poise they show on the track.

  1. So, I’m having a party conversation with a lesbian friend and “Personal Best” comes up. She denounces it as a lousy portrayal of lesbianism. Yeah, I answer, but it is a great sports movie! And it is too. Personal Best is not just a great sports movie, but is also a great bildungsroman (“coming of age” movie). In it the lead character, Chris Cahill (Mariel Hemingway) is involved in a dysfunctional relationship with her father who is a coach. We see little of her family life. The movie revolves around her moving to a new family and getting new parents: Tory Skinner (Patrice Donnelly) and Terry Tingloff (Scott Glenn, who is, you guessed it, a coach). The problem is the tranference of parental relations is confused from the very beginning by a sexual relation between Chris and Tory. The waters are muddled even further when jealousy rears his head between the “parents,” and between Tory and Chris who are set in competition against each other by Tingloff. Through it all, Chris grows up so that, when Tingloff comes on to her in a vulnerable situation, she staves him off (unlike Tory in a earlier scene) and begins to develop her own relationships and her own philosophy of competition. The moral of the movie is: To be competitive you don’t have to be better than everybody else, just a little bit better than you were yesterday. You don’t have to kill the competition, you can love the competition, but always remember, you are the competition.

  2. When Personal Best came out in 1982, at about the same time as Chariots of Fire – another running movie – I loved it. But seeing it again, it’s lost something. Now, all I see is Mariel Hemingway whining and crying through the whole movie. I think what caught me the first time was the great photography, Mariel’s hot bod, and Scott Glenn’s great lines about comparing coaching the women’s team to Chuck Noll coaching the Pittsburgh Steelers. All three are still great. Just don’t expect much else.

  3. I admit I am positively biased in favor of this movie. I saw it long ago when I was young and it impressed me alot in yonder days that now are long gone. Was it the nudity scenes? No, though there are enough of them to attract many an adolescent. Was it the relationship problems that connect and disconnect the personnage? Maybe. But sure it was the sports ethics that attracted me to this movie: the complicated interplay of mental and physical fitness, and how strongly psychology can impact on athletic achievements. If you are not interested in any of these things the film might turn out a giant loss of time (130″) and a disappointment on top of it. If, however, you like Mariel Hemmingway or any other actor involved this might be a good opportunity to see them at quite a young age.The digi quality was fairly well, satisfying my humble standards at least. The sound came out quite silent, but that might be a problem with my (European!) equipment.

  4. Mariel Hemmingway, what do say about an actress to has the family pedigree she has. She could have chosen to live her life as one of the higest paid models around. Instead, she dipped her feet in the waters of performance. She is still a beautiful woman, she is also a fine actress. Great to look at. I just wish she would do more film.Personal Best was an interesting movie, it gave a look at professional sports, and the Athlete’s who give their all, a look at what goes on behind the professional games.

  5. People talk about this as being a gay movie. It is not. The lovers just happen to be both women. If they weren’t the main premise of the story about the stress and strain that world class athletics can have on a relationship would never have worked. Some of the photography is extremely intense and beautiful at the same time. Most of the actors were actually world class athletes too.

  7. Works fine on my DVD player here in the UK

  8. Not well done but interesting I kept it

  9. Tiene 3 intensidades para aventar el aire. Funciona muy bien.

  10. This is my 3rd fan. I’ve always been pleased, but consistently have a problem with just a piece or 2 of my hair getting caught in the right side. I’ve had this just a few weeks and already it’s not working on right side. I’ve blown air through it, looked to be sure I didn’t have any hair caught that maybe I didn’t feel. Nothing. So it’s not working the way I need it to. If I mess with it it’ll come on, but not as strong as the other side. Makes me sad. I guess I’ll need to look for another brand next time.Very comfortable to wear, keeps neck and behind ears cool regardless of the air around you.I wear this at my job cashiering, naturally I’m right by the doors that automatically are opening and closing constantly. Living in Florida and the brutal summer we had I was able to work wearing this without issue. Battery is great. I turn it on low and run it from start to finish and can even keep it running while I make dinner. We are talking from 8am until it dies around 5-5:30pm. That’s keeping it on low.I have bought a 2nd one as the 1st did start having a loud noise when for some reason fan blades on left side started sounding strange. I’m hearing that same sound in this 2nd pair. It’s not terrible, but annoying to not just you, but those near. I carry it in a padded lunch box to prevent it from being banged when it’s not on charger or in use.I have long curly hair and it does grab loose strands once in awhile, but not bad and it’s only occurred a few times.I was training someone who is pregnant, with the heat generated from being in constant motion and those doors she was miserable, but I loaned her this. She was surprised at just how much such a small thing like this helped. A coworker bought the same one after I. Loaned it to her and we both love them.Other then the left fan motor i have zero complaints with this product. It’s comfortable, great battery, doesn’t heat too the touch of make neck sweaty, and doesn’t fall off my neck as I work.

  11. This is a great classic movie!

  13. I could care less about sports, or Scott Glenn. I watched this movie for one reason only – the nude scenes of Mariel Hemingway and Patrice Donnelly. LOVED IT !

  14. very good, bit loud but keep me cool

  15. This fan isn’t quite as strong as some others i’ve used and is just a fan, no cooling (AC) effect. But this fan has a long battery life and even better-works while plugged in! I work in a hot kitchen so if the fan dies i just plug in to a battery pak, keep it in my pocket and as long as the battery pak has charge the fan will not turn off unless you want it to. This is huge for me-i overheat super easy and love in a desert. Hightly recommend! Also i have trashed 2 neck fans in the time i have had this one and it’s going strong. Stay cool ya’ll!

  18. Bought this neck fan for a trip to VietNam & Cambodia and it made the trip much more bearable. Would be even more helpful in more arid locations. Sound is tolerable and it runs a long time on medium. Used the high setting a few times nearer the end of the day when it would have been fine if it ran out of power–although it never did. TIP: save the box–made it much easier to pack and I filled the extra interior space with underwear so it really didn’t take up extra space.

  19. funciona como esperaba

  20. I honesty bought this without reading much about the item but I LOVE IT! I bought it for an upcoming cruise and it’s very light weight, has 3 settings and is actually very powerful and quiet!
